The Rabbit R1 is back in the spotlight with RabbitOS 2, a software refresh aiming to fix usability and deliver the clarity users have been asking for.

In an eight-minute video, Rabbit announced that the RabbitOS 2 update is rolling out as a free download for existing R1 owners. No new hardware was teased, but the update puts heavy emphasis on making the touchscreen and interface more practical.

A revamped Quick Settings screen now offers faster access to volume, brightness, and camera or text cards. Gesture controls have been improved, making the touchscreen feel more responsive and familiar, almost like Android or iOS.

AI Mode expands beyond English for the first time

AI Mode now speaks five new languages, bringing Google’s AI-driven search to global users for the first time beyond English.

One major upgrade is in conversation handling. Replies are now displayed directly on the screen with improved flow, while a microphone mute toggle and an expanded keyboard option allow for smoother follow-ups. A new camera shortcut has also been added for quicker interactions.

Rabbit admitted that many users found the device’s capabilities unclear. RabbitOS 2 responds with a redesigned “Card Stack” function, which acts as an app drawer for tasks like Magic Gallery, recordings, and Rabbit Intern.

The update makes smaller but meaningful tweaks to existing features. For example, translations now come with full conversation transcripts, which sync automatically with the Rabbit Hole Rabbit’s activity hub.

The R1 Creations tool is also getting attention, offering a new home for vibe coders. Here, users can browse AI-built apps and games or create their own through the Rabbit Intern agent, which turns prompts into functional programs without extra tools.

The Rabbit R1 hasn’t exactly taken off since its 2024 debut, with many buyers unsure of its value. RabbitOS 2 is a clear attempt to address those criticisms by making the device feel both simpler and more versatile.

Key improvements include:

Rabbit hopes this update breathes life into its AI-driven handheld. Whether RabbitOS 2 is enough to win over skeptics remains to be seen, but for current owners, the R1 finally looks like a device with a clearer purpose.
